Just You And Joe: Joe Bourne Returns For A WFIU Jazz Celebration

Joe Bourne and David Brent Johnson

Joe Bourne and David Brent Johnson on air for the 40th anniversary of "Just You And Me."

When Joe Bourne arrived in Bloomington forty years ago this month, he replaced a popular afternoon jazz host named Michael Bourne. The two were not related, but Joe proved to be as well-liked as his predecessor (who went on to become one of the most well-known jazz DJs in the world), stamping the program with his own style and his own title--Just You And Me. Starting on December 19, 1984 and continuing for the next 27 years, Joe took up his place behind the microphone every weekday at 3:30 and regaled his listeners with jazz from all eras, stories of all kinds, and the general warm cheer of his personality. In 2011 he handed over the reins to David Brent Johnson, but continued to host the Friday non-jazz edition of the show for three more years before retiring and moving to southeastern Indiana with his wife Paula.

Fast forward to December 19, 2024, and Joe was back! To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the program, Joe and David hosted a live broadcast of Just You And Me from Studio 6 in the Radio-Television Services Building on the Indiana University-Bloomington campus. With friends, family and longtime listeners in attendance, Joe once again spun a magical web of music and conversation, telling tales of his life and DJ years and playing some of his favorite jazz artists. We hope to bring Joe back from time to time for future shows, but in the meantime you can hear the 40th-anniversary celebration in its entirety at the audio link above.
