A man died in the hospital following a low-speed chase in Clay County.
Law enforcement responded to a call about a suspicious person at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Cory. The responding trooper later found a vehicle that matched the description headed east on County Road 300 South.
The vehicle was outside of the lane markers and at one point stopped in the middle of the road. The trooper tried to stop the vehicle but the driver disregarded emergency signals to pull over.
The chase continued south toward State Road 59, where the sheriff’s department intervened. Officers deployed stop sticks, flattening the vehicle’s tires, but the driver continued onto State Road 59. The trooper cornered the vehicle, and it went into a cornfield before stopping.
Law enforcement instructed the driver to exit the vehicle, “but the subject refused to exit and began to disrobe.” Multiple troopers were in a standoff with the driver for an hour before taking him into custody.
The driver was identified as 35-year-old Aaron Krout from Brazil, Indiana. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The Vigo County Coroner’s Office is investigating his death. The Office confirmed the autopsy was done today but cause of death will not be available until next week.
