A Seymour attorney was arrested Tuesday and faces charges related to not paying his taxes for five years.
Jason Smith, 45, deposited $3.8 million into bank accounts tied to two companies from 2019 to 2023, according to Indiana State Police.
He is facing 11 felony counts, including corrupt business influence, tax evasion and theft. The charges also list a misdemeanor drug offense.
ISP began investigating Smith in September 2024 and says Smith owes the state and county nearly $42,000 from about $790,000 in taxable income.
ISP says that Smith deposited $2.5 million into the Smith Law Services bank account. He also used this account for personal expenses. At the same time, Smith deposited $1.3 million into an account tied to his second business, Floyd Harris Holding Company, LLC.
While searching his home in October, investigators seized from a safe 2.8 pounds of Kratom, a psychoactive substance.
ISP issued a warrant for Smith’s arrest Monday. He was incarcerated in the Johnson County Jail, pending being transferred back to Jackson County where he will face an initial appearance in court.
