Ranked By Popularity

alstroemeria

I was surprised to read recently that flowers are ranked each year for popularity in the trade. This is probably not surprising, as everything seems to be ranked in one way or another, and florists probably need to know specifics instead of just hunches so that they can order more precisely.

The cut flower rankings are as follows:

  1. Roses are the most commonly purchased flowers…
  2. Followed closely by carnations, which as we all know, can last two weeks in a vase, looking fresh the whole time.
  3. Chrysanthemums come in third, and of course, they have a long vase life.
  4. Fourth place goes to Alstroemeria, which are imported from South America, and they were actually found and improved there in the frost-free climate. They are also extremely long lasting flowers. A common name for them is parrot feathers.
  5. Tulips are in fifth place, and although we all love the look of them, they do not last a long time unfortunately. I splurge on a bunch in the spring if I feel especially flower deprived and make slits in their stems right underneath the flower with a sharp point of a knife, as that is supposed to make them last longer.
  6. Gerbera daisies are sixth.
  7. Lilies are seventh.
  8. Glads are eighth.
  9. Iris are ninth.
  10. Baby's breath (Gypsophila), the ultimate partner for most other blossoms, is number ten.
