Usually in the spring we are focused mainly on our annuals. It gives us a rush when we see all of the colorful options and have the fun of deciding which ones to buy. I sometimes buy so many that they will barely fit in my car. But spring is also the time that we should be looking online and in catalogs and purchasing perennial chrysanthemum plants.
Buy small plants in the spring and they will mature in your garden and produce breathtaking fall color. Having had time to get established in your garden, they then have a better chance of wintering over, unlike those you buy as mature plants in the fall. Also, there are so many different varieties of mums, if you purchase them now from accredited nurseries and have them shipped.
For example, spoon and quilled mums that have such interesting petals. I am going to order ‘Ivory Pinwheel’, which is white with a yellow blush. There are many types of mums to choose from: button mums with tightly packed deep rose petals like ‘Small Wonder’ and cushion mums like the tall bushel basket mum named ‘Hopscotch’. Football mums have corsage size flowers on tall 3-foot plants. I have my eye on ‘Coral Cavalier’, and I want daisy mums in every color available as they are so cheerful.
