Hopeful Gardeners

vegetable bounty

“To create a garden is to search for a better world. In our effort to improve on nature, we are guided by a vision of paradise. Whether the result is a horticultural masterpiece or only a modest vegetable patch, it is based on the expectation of a glorious future. This hope for the future is at the heart of all gardening.”

Some of my friends in Helmsburg, Indiana belong to a garden club that is named “The Hopeful Planters.” I love to attend their meetings, as they are an optimistic and generous bunch just as their name suggests. But then most of the gardeners I know are forward looking and optimistic.

As we plant, we envision a future full of fruitfulness and beauty – bounty and beauty. We forget at this time of the year how dry and hot recent summers have been, as we bless the new additions to our garden with careful pats to tamp the soil down as we plant them. Our dreams are always of a perfect future for our garden.

Early summer fills gardeners with enthusiasm and joy and visions of harvests to come. Despite less than ideal forecasts for the weather ahead, at this time of year we ardently believe in a glorious future for our gardens, as we move toward high summer.
