Naturally I have always loved the yellowy-green hostas that light up shady areas, but now I am on the prowl for other plants with this eye-catching color.
Perennials such as bleeding heart and coral bells have some lovely golden chartreuse cultivars such as Dicentra ‘Gold Heart’ and Heuchera ‘Citronelle.’ Mass those in groups of three or five for impact in a planting or use just one as an accent.
There is also ‘Forever Goldy’ Arborvitae, a heat-tolerant evergreen that will eventually top 15-20 feet in zones 5 through 8. It makes a bright statement as a hedge or as a specimen.
And there is Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Lemon Daddy’ that is only four feet at maturity in zones 6 through 9 and that shines in the shrub border in a small space.
I grow Caryopteris ‘Lil Miss Sunshine.’ It is a late-blooming, deer-resistant, and heat- tolerant shrub with blue flowers that contrast well with its foliage.
I have just purchased my first smokebush with yellowish foliage, Cotinus ‘Golden Spirit,’ and I put it near my Cotinus ‘Royal Purple.’
I am quite addicted to these chartreuse accents, as perhaps you have guessed.
