Noon Edition

The Jazz Crusaders

This week on Afterglow we'll feature the 1960s studio recordings of the Jazz Crusaders during the second hour of the program.

Although the Jazz Crusaders eventually dropped "Jazz" from their name (and, to a large extent, from their sound as well), their 1960s albums reflect the work of a group steeped in hardbop and soul jazz. Led by pianist Joe Sample and trombonist Wayne Henderson, their original compositions such as "Freedom Sound" and "Young Rabbits" had an audience-winning accessibility.

Some of the Jazz Crusader recordings featured on this program also include guitarist Joe Pass; they are all drawn from a recent Mosaic collection documenting the band's stay on the Pacific Jazz label.

In the first hour of the program we'll feature jazz interpretations of Bob Dylan from Madeleine Peyroux, Stan Getz, Nina Simone, and Bob Dorough, as well as a set of Wes Montgomery tributes.
