This week on Afterglow we'll feature the early recordings of singer Abbey Lincoln, made for the Riverside label in the late 1950s, that showcased her jazz vocal chops before she went on to make social-message albums such as We Insist! with husband Max Roach.
Although Lincoln's Riverside records hew to a more conventional songbook, hints of her later direction surface in performances such as "Afro-Blue" and "Brother, Where Are You?" Sidemen include tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins and trumpeter Kenny Dorham.
We'll also hear new music from multi-instrumentalist James Carter and singer-songwriter Melody Gardot.
