That sounds familiar!

Can you guess this piece? Here's a hint: nice try Napoleon!

This composition is a familiar staple of American Independence Day celebrations, cannons and all, but was commissioned to commemorate the repulsion of Napoleon’s forces. The composer even included the French anthem La Marseillaise into the work, confronted by the roar of cannon. The overture was set to premiere in 1881 with the city’s bells pealing on cue and precisely linked cannons adding to the “showy and noisy” effect. Unfortunately, the ruler’s assassination in 1881 delayed the premiere until the following year.
