Noon Edition

Food Writer Christine Barbour

It's healthier, by and large, to cook in the house. When you eat out, you're getting enormous amounts of fat and salt, and you're getting huge portions. But the temptation is to say, ‘Wow, this is how much they gave me, this must be how much I'm supposed to eat.' So we eat too much, and we're just not healthy.

Christine Barbour is the former food columnist for the Bloomington Herald Times, and is the food editor for Bloom magazine.

She is the author, with Scott Feickert, of Indiana Cooks! Great Restaurant Recipes for the Home Kitchen and, with Scott Hutcheson, Home Grown Indiana: A Food Lover's Guide to Good Eating in the Hoosier State.

With her husband she co-wrote the textbook Keeping the Republic: Power and Citizenship in American Politics.

She is a co-director of Slow Food Bloomington, part of a movement that promotes a way of eating that is local, seasonal, leisurely, and convivial.
