Curator Judith Barter

Judith Barter in colorful artistic print jacket

The collection is sacrosanct. You do not sell pictures to pay operating expenses. If I sell a picture, it's to buy another picture. I don't sell a picture in order to pay the staff, or to turn the lights on, or to fund an exhibition.

Judith Barter's books and exhibitions include Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman; Edward Hopper; Apostles of Beauty: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago; and American Arts at the Art Institute of Chicago: From Colonial Times to World War I.

She is currently writing America After the Fall: Painting in the 1930s, a book that will accompany the exhibition by the same name to be shown in Chicago, Paris, and London. The New York Times named her as a notable American curator.
