Turn Out The Stars: Volume Four

Carl Perkins jazz pianist

When people pass on, it‘s customary at a funeral for friends, loved ones, and colleagues to pay tribute. When a great jazz musician passes on, other musicians have often paid tribute in a way that‘s natural for them--by writing, playing, or recording compositions that serve as musical elegies for the departed.

This year's Night Lights "Turn Out the Stars" edition of jazz elegies includes tributes to Billy Strayhorn, Johnny Dodds, and two highly talented bassists who died young in the 1960s-Scott LaFaro and Albert Stinson. Pianist Randy Weston offers a general salute to artists who have passed, while Louis Armstrong wraps up the show with a rousing rendition of the spiritual "Bye and Bye" that namechecks lost legends of the swing era.
