Jazz for the Easter Weekend

Some previous Night Lights shows from the archives, offered as listening suggestions for the coming weekend:

Jazz, Spiritually Speaking. Jazz interpretations of spirituals by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Grant Green, Louis Armstrong, Archie Shepp with Horace Parlan, and more.

Music for Peace: Mary Lou Williams' Sacred Jazz. An early Night Lights show highlighting pianist Mary Lou Williams' early-1960s sacred-jazz recordings. Williams was a deeply religious woman in her later years, and her sacred-jazz compositions actually pre-date Duke Ellington's more famous works in this vein.

Songs of Peace. Our 2006 Easter program, featuring music from John Coltrane, Horace Silver, Bill Evans, and Mahalia Jackson with Duke Ellington.

On a more secular note, Bill Kirchner's turn on WBGO's Jazz From the Archives this Sunday night features the leader recordings of arranger, composer, and Miles Davis collaborator Gil Evans. Bill's beaten me to the punch-a somewhat-similiar Night Lights program is scheduled for the beginning of June. You can catch Bill's show this Sunday at 11 p.m. EST on WBGO.
