Musica Ficta And Spanish Baroque Music

The Spanish composer Sebastián Durón made some unfortunate choices in his life. Spain was without a monarch during the first years of the eighteenth century, and the fighting to determine who would rule Spain included almost every European country as well as America. Unfortunately, Durón backed the wrong horse: he was quite vocal in his support of the Archduke Charles of Austria, but Philip V from the house of Bourbon was the eventual victor. In the process of leaving Spain after his dismissal from his post, he tried to take some of the best music from the royal chapel’s music library with him, including his own music. But, he was caught red-handed.
