Henry V ruled England for just under ten years, but he lived quite an exciting life before his death at the age of just 35. He amassed a lot of military experience fighting for control of France during the Hundred Years’ War, and when he was just sixteen, he survived being shot in the face with an arrow although it left him permanently scared. In between trying to conquer France and all of his other kingly duties, he apparently had time to try his hand at composing. The Old Hall manuscript preserves a Gloria written by the composer “Roy Henry.” With the strong connection between England and France during the period that this manuscript was written, and the fact that the words “roy” and the French word for king “le roi” look very similar, it is easy to make a connection between king Henry and “Roy Henry.”
