Early Spanish Organ Music

Juan Cabanilles: Tientos y Passacalles

Composer Juan Cabanilles was one of the 17th Century’s great Spanish organists, evidenced in the many works that survive for his chosen instrument. The 1999 Dorian label recording of selected pieces by Cabanilles performed by Jan Willem Jansen is a terrific first-stop for anyone wanting an introduction.

The CD includes two vocal compositions, also by Cabanilles, performed by Los Músicos De Su Alteza and directed by Luis Antonio González.

Various: El Arte de Tañer

Danish organist Poul Pock-Steen has released a new recording of early organ music on the PARLA son label. The program is made up of an excellent selection of 16th-century Spanish pieces, plus some earlier and later works. Recorded on original Renaissance organs, Pock-Steen’s playing is vibrant, it dances and sings in equal measure.

El Arte de Tañer may be purchased from Via Artis Konsort (more...)
