Buxtehude Organ Music

Dietrich Buxtehude was such a popular organist during his lifetime that Johann Sebastian Bach risked his job in Arnstadt to study Buxtehude’s technique. George Frederic Handel and Johann Mattheson also traveled to Lübeck to study with the highly-respected composer. It was not just his organ music that mesmerized Bach and Handel, but also the style and structure of his cantatas, a structure that is eerily similar to what Bach would assume in many of his cantatas.

In a recent collection of CDs on the Hyperion label, organist Christopher Herrick has taken on the task of recording Buxtehude’s complete organ works.

We have included links to all four volumes of Buxtehude's organ works, although we only featured selections from volume 4.
