18th-Century German Quartets and Sonatas for Flute

Telemann Flute Quartets

If there's one Baroque composer whose works Musica Antiqua Cologne performs best of all, it might be Georg Philipp Telemann. The ensemble's 2005 Archiv recording of flute quartets explores a handful of pieces composed for recorder or transverse flute. The playing is focused, intense, and true to the ensemble, highly individual.

Richter Sonatas for Flute, Harpsichord, and Cello

A new Naxos label recording of flute sonatas by Franz Xavier Richter is an auspicious beginning for a series. Flutist Pauliina Fred, harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen, and cellist Heidi Peltoniemi bring a fresh and vibrant energy to the music of a composer who falls somewhere between the Baroque and Classical Eras. I look forward to the next volume in the series.
