A Wild New Production of Mozart's 'Magic Flute'

The Indiana University Opera Theater presents Mozart's "The Magic Flute' Di Zauberflote in a new production that they will be sharing with the Atlanta Opera. WFIU's George Walker talked with the IU's Principal Designer and Chair of Opera Studies David Higgins.

"This is a production that we've been working on for more than a year. I've been working in close collaboration with the stage director Tomer Zvulum. It's a complicated show and we have thirteen different scenes."

"The Magic Flute really offers the designer a lot to work from. There is the love story of the young price seeking the lady of the locket, the conflict between Sarastro and the Queen of the Night, and then there's the comic sub plot with Papagano and Papagana . With the set, and it's a very active unit set, we try to have magical, lyrical and even comic moments to go with the drama."

At the IU Opera Theater David Higgins designs the set and also the costumes. "In the costumes we've tried to mirror the characters and also the settings. This comes through in the over all looks and extends through the colors and even to the qualities of the fabrics that we use."

The IU Opera Theater's production of "The Magic Flute" Die Zauberflote conducted by Mark Gibson opens on November 13th and continues with performances on the 14th, 20th and 21st.
