Director Dina Epshteyn is back at the Bloomington Playwrights Project to direct Henry Murray's Woodward/Newman Drama Award winning Three Views of the Same Object.
An Eager Director
"I actually read it here last year while I was at the BPP directing Still the River Runs and I absolutely fell in love with it. I practically begged to get to come back to direct it," said Epshteyn.
A Varied Writer With A Varied View
Playwright Henry Murray is also a story writer, a novelist and a poet, so he's an author who can look at things in a variety of ways. "Yes, each of the Three Views... has different actors with just one traveling from scene to scene," agreed Epshteyn. "On an intellectual level, there are three sort of alternate or parallel universes. And it's an exploration of the question. Are all of these possibilities just as likely to happen or does our life need to be a certain way and run a certain course. "
Theatre Of And With Ideas
"I'm not one for theatre that tells us how to be," add Epshteyn. "But this play definitely shows us that the way that we react to things does change the way we live our lives and so I think it'll be very good for starting discussions about morality or our attitudes or the way we live our lives, but it doesn't tell us that we should do things a certain way."
Not A Sci-Fi Piece
It sounded a bit as if this might be a cold sort of sci-fi piece, but Epshteyn quickly disagreed. "No, that's not it at all. We're trying to warm it up quite a bit. All Three Views of the Same Object take place in a house. The characters are clearly separate and filled out. It's a lovely day with real people going through every day activities, and everything seems normal except that all three versions seem to be happening at the same time."
