Italian Trumpet Concertos

At the beginning of the 18th century, the role of concerto soloist was moving away from a violin-centered view to incorporate a wider variety, including wind instruments. At this time, the trumpet was still seen as an instrument whose days had passed. But thanks to some ambitious composers, it resumed a place of prominence, even before the advent of the valved trumpet.  The music of those baroque masters is recorded with incredible vitality here by trumpeter Gábor Tarkövi. He performs with the Bavarian Radio Chamber Orchestra directed by Radoslaw Szulc.

As the trumpet was resurrected, so was the pairing of the trumpet and voice.  Arias abound from Baroque opera, sacred music and concerti.  Mojca Erdmann joins the ensemble for arias from Alessandro Scarlatti, Baldassare Galuppi, and a version of Antonio Vivaldi's "Domine Deus" from his Gloria transcribed for trumpet.

Our quick pick this week comes from another master of the baroque trumpet as well as sacred music.  Heinrich von Biber's 53 voice setting of the mass (Missa Salisburgensis) written for the massive Salzburg Cathedral is performed by La Stagione Armonica, directed by Sergio Balestracci.
