Celebrate the Holidays With The Terre Haute Symphony

The Terre Haute Symphony conducted by David Bowden presents "Celebrate the Holidays" Saturday, December 5, 2009 in Tilson Music Hall. The soloist for the evening will be Indiana State University faculty member, soprano Colleen Davis.

Colleen Davis comes from a musical family and although she denies "presiding over her family," she is the wife of William Davis the director of the Indiana State University Symphony and the mother of two musical sons. In fact, one is a high school violinist who'll be playing in the orchestra.

"The family I grew up in was very active musically and we sang a lot. Initially it was standards and show music, but gradually I focused more and more on the classical repertoire. However, I'm pleased that I do have a background in theatre and even dance to go with my vocal training, "added Davis.

The Terre Haute Symphony's concert is quite varied. There are holiday favorites like "Sleigh Ride,""The Christmas Song" and "the Little Drummer Boy" along with a medley from Handel's Messiah and a set of Festive Sounds from Hannukah.

"There are actually a couple of pieces on the program that are new to me," said Davis. One is "The Three Holy Kings from an Eastern Land." It's by Richard Strauss. And although, I'm quite familiar with the music from Messiah, we have a new arrangement of one of pieces that before had been only a recitative that I'm looking forward to sharing."
