A Tribute to János Starker celebrates the 100th birthday of Professor János Starker on July 5, 2024. The program showcases the breadth of Starker’s 55-year career at Indiana University from 1958 to 2013 and includes collaborations with colleagues like pianist György Sebök, violinist Josef Gingold, and composer Bernhard Heiden. All recordings come from the archives of the Jacobs School of Music, held in the William and Gayle Cook Music library, and were performed on the Indiana University campus.

The program features stories from Starker’s time at IU and personal reminiscences taken from interviews and his autobiography. When asked about the type of legacy he hoped to leave, Starker remarked: “After the standing ovation, eventually people sit down. But teaching moves through generations.” Teaching was the most important part of his life, which is clear through the generations of students and colleagues that he taught, encouraged, and uplifted.

This program is an installment of the series IUMusicArchive, a collaboration between the IU Jacobs School of Music and WFIU made possible through the support of the Wennerstrom-Phillips Fund for Classical Music. Listen on Saturday, July 6th at 5 pm on WFIU2, or on Sunday, July 7th at 6 pm on WFIU.
