Moo! Scientists Are Making Eco-Friendly Diesel Fuel From Butter

Butter may not be the first material you think of when searching for an alternative biodiesel fuel. However, scientists report that butter could be used to make diesel fuel.

Researchers have become interested in butter because of the rising global demand for biodiesel. With one billion pounds of butter produced annually, it was no wonder that scientists turned to it for a solution.

Could excess, rotten, or nonfood-grade butter be used to make biodiesel at affordable prices?

Scientists have found that, after converting the butter, the material met all but one of the official test standards for biodiesel. In the future, scientists hope to design a more pure or blended butter formula that could be combined with biodiesel for diesel engines.
