WTIU Conference on Aging – What We Learned

Brent shares with the group that the aging conference was a success!

  • Sample Packet from 2018 available to pass around

  • Overview of Final Agenda from 2018, things to add for next year could include a workshop on "falls" and chair yoga and stretching.

  • Survey Results from 2018. Among the positive data received from the attendee surveys, 100 percent would recommend this conference to a friend.

  • Tim’s feedback:

 Brent,

Here are a couple observations from the aging confab. There were between 25 and 35 participants in the three sessions that I attended. After the conference Martha, Barb and I talked about the need to market this conference to 50 and 60 year olds. Martha also mentioned that it would be good to get sons/daughters to attend w/ mothers or fathers to make it an intergenerational thing. This might require marketing beyond our traditional audience. Once again kudos for a job well done. If there were any glitches you and your team covered them over seamlessly.

Regards,

Tim

Next year:

“WTIU Second Annual Conference on Aging”

August 3, 2019 from 9a-4p

Indiana Memorial Union

Learn how to do the conference off site so we have the option of taking it on the road? Possibilities include, Columbus or Terre Haute.

Tickets - $25 or 2 for $40 (same)

10 comp tickets to: Area 10, United Way, and Bloomington Commission on aging. Will focus on getting these tickets to the agencies sooner next year to ease distribution.

Provide elements so they can promote availability on their own through mail and social media.

Vendor/Resource Tables – Non-Profit $40 (2 guests with lunch); For Profit $60 (then $75 the year after?)

Low price and allowing booth workers to attend sessions/lunch provides an entry point for Corporate Development prospect lists; also reaches the younger staff so they can serve as ambassadors for the conference when they return to their businesses. (Booth workers are slightly younger than our average attendees.)

Sponsors – Promos/thank you spots, save the date cards, advanced printed materials, signage, etc. 4-8 tickets?

Marketing - Provide social media/e-mail elements for attendees, vendors, and sponsors. Radio buy on WCLS? Need save the date cards for next year, and year after that.

Need a policy for ‘disclosure’ – similar to news, so that if vendors, sponsors or underwriters serve as presenters, we have disclosed their investment in the conference/stations.

Do we need a Steering Committee yet? (CAB, non-profits, staff, partners) Can we handle the role of a steering committee by electronic survey?

Nominating Committee

Joan Curts, Tim Decker, Mike Hefron, Martha Nice

Sally Gaskill has offered to get the ball rolling on this project.

We currently have 5 vacant seats and we hope to have prospects by the December meeting. We are hoping to find people outside of Monroe County who have an interest or background in Public Media.

The members of the Nominating Committee have received lists of multi-year WTIU members in Jackson and Morgan Counties, plus the city of Indianapolis. At a later time, please review the lists and see if you can identify a few names of individuals who might be willing to serve on the WTIU CAB. It would be especially helpful if we could identify individuals who might help us to diversify the makeup of the WTIU CAB in terms of age and ethnic backgrounds. Brent will follow up with members of the Nominating Committee later this month.

50th Anniversary Event/Open House Preview

The date for the WTIU/WFIU Open House has been set for November 8th, from 6-8pm

Special Gift, leads to Curriculum Guides

A longtime friend of the station has gifted us money which we are going to use to start designing curriculum guides to accompany our local programs. We are going to start with the James Whitcomb Riley documentary and hope to design an accompanying guide for 4th-grade students across Indiana.
