If you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why The Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny concurs, saying “I have followed Dave Stryker’s playing since his early days…and he just gets better and better with one of the most joyous feels around.”
In his latest work, “Stryker with Strings Goes to The Movies,” the Jacobs School of Music professor collaborates with his IU colleague and arranger Brent Wallarab to explore their mutual love of movies by recording 11 classic movie themes with a 30-piece studio orchestra. Together, they “embrace cinematics with a sound that feels bright and airy. A sense of wonder underpins the entirety of the album. Ups and downs, the high energy alongside the mellowed grooves, it has a cyclical understanding of time...bathing the sound in a nostalgic hue.” (Skopemag.com)
