Sen. Todd Young Sides With Democrats On Measure Limiting Trump's Military Authority

The Senate has approved a bipartisan measure limiting President Donald Trump's authority to launch military operations against Iran.

The resolution says Trump must seek approval from Congress before engaging in further military action against Iran. Supporters say the resolution is not about Trump or even the presidency, but instead is an important reassertion of congressional power to declare war.

Eight Republicans sided with Democrats on a procedural vote setting up Senate action, including Indiana Sen. Todd Young. He spoke about his position in an interview with NPR:

"It's really important that Congress fulfill our constitutitional responsibilities, which is to declare war, to authorize the use of military force, and to engage in these debates on a consistent basis, as long as we have men and women overseas, ready to put their life on the line for all of us," Young says.

Trump has called the vote an attempt to embarrass him and would tie his hands.

The Democratic-controlled House passed a separate, nonbinding war powers resolution last month. The House could take up the Senate resolution later this month. Two-thirds votes in the House and GOP-run Senate would be needed to override an expected Trump veto.
