The MCCSC school board has named interim superintendent Markey Winston as the permanent superintendent of the district.
The school board made it official Tuesday night in a public hearing.
Winston’s seven-year tenure at MCCSC includes deputy and assistant superintendent, and most recently interim superintendent. She was placed in the interim role after the board fired Jeff Hauswald.
"It's just a continuation, you know, building upon the history and the traditions of our school corporation. We've got a lot of wonderful things in place. And I think from yesterday to today and on to tomorrow, I'm just going to continue to do that work,” she said.
During the six months she served as interim superintendent, she held nearly 200 listening sessions and established the Young Child Advisory Group and the Superintendent’s Student Voice Advisory Council.
Board President April Hennessey said those initiatives helped Winston develop her deep understanding of the community.
Winston said improving health and safety efforts, expanding early learning programs, and addressing socio-economic status are some of her top priorities.
"Society is very diverse, and we want to make sure that our students have those kinds of experiences, and we recognize that every child is going to benefit from those kinds of learning experiences and those kinds of relationships.”
The merger is still on the table, but board members say they’re excited to move forward with a comprehensive redistricting study first.
The board wants the redistricting priorities to include socioeconomic balance and cost effectiveness.
But tonight was about celebrating a new leader and Winston said she knows there’s a lot of work to be done.
“It's pretty amazing, and just to be trusted with the future of over 10,000 children, I take that very sincerely,” Winston said.
Winston comes from 30 years of public-school service primarily at MCCSC, Cincinnati, and Chicago. She earned her Ph.D. and master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and her administration and superintendent license from Xavier University.
