Update: BPD take man who barricaded himself at Kinser Flats into custody

Jaden Grubb

Police outside the Kinser Flats on North Kinser Pike. (Monroe County Correctional Center)

A resident of Kinser Flats Apartments who barricaded himself inside Tuesday afternoon eventually was removed without injury, according to Bloomington Police.

A BPD release identified him as Jaden Grubb.

Officers responded to the building on North Kinser Pike at 1:40 p.m. after a report of suspicious activity, BPD said.

When police arrived, the building manager told officers that Grubb had told another resident that he had military grade explosives he would detonate because of his pending eviction.

The Kinser Flats apartment complex, owned by Centerstone Indiana, is a long-term supportive housing facility with 50 units.

Camera footage from 6 a.m. showed someone throwing a lit object down a hallway; the object then exploded, according to BPD.

The release said officers went to the apartment to contact Grubb, who would not leave a back bedroom of the unit.

At some point, a woman came out of the back room, BPD said. She told officers that Grubb had confined her there when officers had first arrived.

Grubb began yelling and threatening officers, BPD said in the release. He opened the bedroom door and threw a burning object. Officers retreated out of the unit, and the object stared to explode, catching the carpet on fire.

Officers started to evacuate the building and a Critical Incident Response Team was dispatched.

Negotiation team members and a police social worker tried to communicate with Grubb, but he wouldn’t exit his bedroom.

The team then used non-lethal techniques to try to force Grubb from the room, but he still didn’t come out. BPD said that tear gas wasn’t used.

Then, the team forced the bedroom door open and took Grubb into custody without further incident or injury, the release said.

BPD interviewed Grubb, and then took him to the Monroe County Jail. He’s preliminarily charged with attempted arson, intimidation, criminal confinement, resisting law enforcement, and an outstanding arrest warrant. These are a level 4 felony, level 6 felonies, a misdemeanor, and level 5 felony, respectively. The outstanding warrant (level 5 felony) is for a charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Bloomington police contacted Indiana State police, who arrived at the apartment. ISP's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team searched the room and didn't find any explosives.

Bloomington Transit and IU buses were called to the scene to give Kinser Flats residents somewhere to stay warm after being evacuated.
