Almvoy American, Inc., a Canadian steel manufacturer that provides precision-engineered steel infrastructure, will be establishing a U.S. headquarters in Monroe County. This will be Almvoy’s first U.S. location. The headquarters will be located at the old Otis Elevator Company factory on South Curry Pike where Phoenix Closures, Inc., currently is. Phoenix will continue to operate on the property.
Almvoy provides steel products for telecommunications, infrastructure and industrial applications. Products include monopoles, equipment platforms and solar structures.
With the new facility, Almvoy aims to improve services with U.S. clients through faster lead times and increased production capacity. The new location in Monroe County also offers growth in high-quality manufacturing jobs.
Monroe County is an employment hub with manufacturing as a key sector, said Jennifer Pearl, Bloomington Economic Development Corp. president. Almvoy’s new location can provide job opportunities for individuals with or without a college degree — around 48 percent of the Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area are without college degrees, Pearl said.
“As we've been going through a time of economic transition right now, being able to grow quality jobs like this in the community where there's both professional tracks at the company, as well as production tracks, it helps to further diversify our community,” she said. “(W)e want to make sure there's a wide variety of options for employment for folks here.”
Almvoy plans to be fully operational by September. This summer Almvoy will be working on bringing equipment and hiring, Almvoy’s Manager of U.S. Operations Eric Greiner said. Starting off Almvoy will be offering 10-15 open positions. In the next of couple of years the goal is to reach 50-100.
The BEDC helped Almvoy find a location, connect with local partners, provide workforce resources and permits to help the company obtain the new location, and will be continuing its partnership with Almvoy. There were no economic incentives to attract Almvoy to Monroe County, Pearl said.
The new location will also aid in long-term goals like growing industry clusters, Pearl said. Not only being next to Phoenix Closures, Almvoy will also be near Intersate 69, Simtra BioPharma Solutions and Cook Medical.
Greiner said in a press release: “We chose Bloomington because of the community - it’s diverse, energetic, and deeply rooted in values we care about. From its strong manufacturing base to the spirit of IU and Hoosier sports, this city feels like a home away from home. My family and I are thrilled to return to our alma mater and be part of a place that’s shaping the future while honoring its past.”
