Indiana University's Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association have decided to pause all Greek life social events until the end of spring break, citing safety and health concerns for students.
In a statement earlier this week, the councils said that it made the decision to address community concerns.
“We as the IFC and Panhellenic Councils have made the choice to place a temporary pause on social events until March 24, 2025 to address reports of health and safety concerns within the community,” the statement said.
The decision follows several reported incidents at social events including hazing, sexual assault and rape. Several of these incidents have resulted in fraternities receiving cease and desist status. When a Greek organization is placed on cease and desist, it pauses any events that could harm attendees or the community. These include social events, recruitment and new member activities.
The most recent fraternity placed on cease and desist is Beta Sigma Psi, which went into effect Feb. 28 and will continue until further notice. They were also placed on elevated disciplinary probation, which went into effect Aug. 23, 2024, and will end Dec. 31. The OFSL cited alcohol, endangering others, sexual harassment, and hazing in its decision.
Sigma Chi is also on cease and desist as of Nov. 5 and will continue until further notice due to hazing.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon is in the same position, as they are on disciplinary probation that went into effect Jan. 1 and will end Dec. 31. Their probation is due to dishonest conduct and hazing.
“This move reflects our community’s willingness to take accountability. The safety of our members and guests is our utmost concern,” the statement said.
Just three months into the spring semester, the IU Police Daily Crime Log reports various cases of illegal alcohol consumption, hazing and battery.
The councils said their reasoning was not only for health concerns, but also to ensure IU Greek life is following proper policies: “We will be taking appropriate action to ensure chapter compliance with updated risk management policies from both councils, as well as a detailed action plan going forward.”
The action plan, besides temporarily suspending social events, has not been announced.
CORRECTION: A previous version of the story said the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life (OSFL) made the decision to pause activity. OSFL advises the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association, but did not make the decision.
