Bloomington figurative painter Ellen Starr Lyon creates bright exuberant portraits and still-life compositions rooted in her own life and experiences. Portraits of her teenage children, with their expressive gestures often flooded with natural light have driven her practice over the past 7-8 years. Recently, she has returned to still life works, creating arrangements of plants, baubles, and personal objects to paint visually dense arrangements that capture the ephemeral relationships between objects and the light that surrounds them. She has work in the permanent collection of the Evansville Museum, UC Irvine, and Indiana University.
