Noon Edition

West

This composer was the first American conductor of the New York Philharmonic, was a television personality, and composed in both classical and popular fields. He was seldom photographed without a cigarette; in fact, it became something of his trademark. It is said that after his concerts, he had someone waiting for him backstage with an already-lit cigarette. After the death of his wife Felicia, this composer became less disciplined, and was increasingly addicted to alcohol and drugs. He eventually developed lung cancer and died of cardiac arrest following lung failure.
