Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809), Symphony No. 6 in D major "Le Matin" ("Morning"): I. Adagio – Allegro

Freiburger Barockorchester. Joseph Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 6–8 (harmonia mundi)

In 1761, Franz Joseph Haydn was named the Vice-Kapellmeister for Prince Paul Anton Esterhazy, assisting the head Kapellmeister Gregor Joseph Werner in his duties as court musician for the Esterhazy estate in Hungary. One of his first tasks there came from the Prince himself: to write music based on the times of day. The results were three symphonies titled "Le Matin," "Le Nuit," and "Le Soir": Morning, Noon, and Evening. The opening movement of the "Morning" symphony depicts a slow sunrise followed by the bustle of the day. Haydn's reputation as a skilled symphonist preceded him to the Esterhazy court, and this first contribution no doubt solidified him as one of the best instrumental composers in the land. In five years, he was promoted from Vice-Kapellmeister to Kapellmeister… but only after Kapellmeister Werner had passed away.
