Bloomington native Hoagy Carmichael achieved a lot of fame in his lifetime. "Stardust," one of his best-known songs, was an early tune. It was first recorded in 1927, in a much faster version than is commonly played. In addition to a career composing and working with some of the biggest names in jazz, Carmichael had an acting career as well, appearing in films like "To Have and Have Not." In his film appearances, he usually played (with no surprise) a musician, giving him an opportunity to plug his own work. Perhaps because of his film work, Carmichael came to the attention of British writer Ian Fleming, who used a description of his appearance as a model for his fictional creation, JAMES BOND. Several times throughout the Fleming novels, BOND is described as looking "something like Hoagy Carmichael, but rather cold and ruthless."
