Satie: Sports et Divertissiments

The Grove's dictionary says of Satie's style: "There are so many conflicting interpretations of Satie's career that it may best be viewed as a single span – one whose unconventional direction was determined by a continual rethinking of the aims and aesthetics of music in reaction to 19th-century practice and excesses. Dance, theatre and cabaret music run as virtually continuous threads through this span, as do the cardinal French virtues of simplicity, brevity and precision." This cross-artistic trend can be seen in Sports et divertissements, a sort of multi-media project, where Satie supplied the music to a series of drawings by CHARLES MARTIN.
