Cho-Liang Lin, violin; Sejong; Anthony Newman, conductor

Vivaldi, Concertos, Op. 8 Nos. 1–6 (The Four Seasons, La Tempesta Di Mare, Il Piacere) (Naxos)

Fall is the time for changing leaves, colder weather, and all sorts of pumpkin flavored things. It's also the time for going back to school. Few people knew this better than Antonio Vivaldi. In addition to being a famed composer all around Europe in the early 18th century, Vivaldi worked as an educator. He was employed full time at the Conservatorio dell'Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, a combination convent, orphanage and music school where he directed an orchestra for young women and girls. The students of the Ospedale were renowned for their musical skill, and performances featuring the orchestra were frequently scheduled to raise money for the conservatory. He wrote his Four Seasons concerti when he was working at the Ospedale, at a time when he was required to composer about two concerti a month for the orchestra!
