Delius: North Country Sketches, Dance

Frederick Delius was born in England, the son of a successful businessman in the wool trade. Although it was assumed that Frederick would follow in his father's footsteps, Frederick showed no interest in wool, preferring instead to manage an orange plantation near Jacksonville, Florida. Here Delius pursued musical interests far more than commercial ones. He studied composition with Thomas F. Ward, and became interested in the songs of the black workers on the plantation. Delius carried the pleasant memory of his time at the orange plantation for the remainder of his life.
