Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880): Les Contes D'Hoffman (The Tales Of Hoffmann): Barcarolle

Staatskappele Dresden; Jeffrey Tate, conductor. Les Contes D'Hoffman (Philips)

The city of Paris has been a mecca for artists, writers, and thinkers of all kinds for centuries. Take composer Jacques Offenbach. He was born "Jakob Offenbach" in Cologne, Germany. But at age 14, he left Cologne to study at the Paris Conservatory, and never looked back. Offenbach became a staple of the Parisian opera scene in the mid 19th century. His operas like Orpheus In The Underworld and La Vie Parisienne were big hits in theatres along the Champs-Elysees. Offenbach's opera The Tales of Hoffmann, which features real-life writer E.T.A. Hoffmann as the protagonist, was his last. He died before its premiere at Paris's Opera-Comique in 1881. Offenbach is even buried in Paris at the Montmartre cemetery, alongside French composers like Hector Berlioz, Leo Delibes, and Nadia Boulanger.
