Musical Also-Rans

With the election season in full swing, there's lots of talk about winners and losers. And this week on the show, we celebrate those musicians who lost out on the top spot in a show called "Musical Also-Rans."

Did you know...

  • Johann Sebastian Bach was the third choice for his high profile in job in Leipzig, the place where he wrote most of his well-known works. The councilmen in Leipzig wanted to give it to either Georg Phillip Telemann or Christoph Graupner instead!
  • Paul Dukas placed second in the Prix de Rome in 1888, losing to Camille Erlanger. Dukas was so upset that he dropped out of the Paris Conservatoire and joined the military.
  • Duke Ellington was chosen for the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1965, but the Pulitzer board denied him the award. He responded "Fate doesn't want me to be too famous too young." He was sixty-seven years old!
