The symphony from which this movement is taken went through a lengthy gestation, in which the composer's conception of his own work underwent many changes. Fond of using allusions in his music, the composer uses a cheerful folk song, but shifts it into the minor key. In addition, one theme is a self-quotation from the composer's own early song cycle.
