Rossini: Barber of Seville, “Largo al factotum”

Rossini's The Barber of Seville is, by far, one of the genuine comedic classics of the operatic repertoire. With it's cast of hilarious characters and over-the-top slapstick comedy, it's no wonder that it's one of the most popular operas performed around the world. The work follows the romantic escapades of Count Almaviva as he tries to win the heart of the beautiful Rosina – with the help of Seville's jack-of-all-trades barber, Figaro! Figaro boldly makes his entrance with this showstopper of an aria, describing how he does everything: barber, tooth puller, hairdresser, and matchmaker on the side! The Barber of Seville is the first of three plays about rascally Figaro, and actually serves as the prequel to another play that later became a classic opera – Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro!
