Schumann: Kinderszenen Selections

Robert Schumann was destined to be a lawyer, but he got bitten by the music bug. He practiced the piano diligently and also experimented with a finger-strengthening device known as a chiroplast. Soon he was complaining of numbness in his middle finger. Within two years the finger was totally crippled. At about the same time, Schumann also introduced the characters of FLORESTAN AND EUSEBIUS into his diary to symbolize opposing parts of his own personality. All of this was happening in the year surrounding his twenty-first birthday!
