That's All Folks

From the earliest stages of his musical career, this composer was interested in folk music. In 1913, he used the traditional English melody "Greensleeves" in his incidental music for two of his stage works. Fifteen years later, he used it for the third time in an opera. From this setting of the folk melody, this composer arranged the song for orchestra and used a traditional tune from Norfolk entitled Lovely Joan as a contrasting middle section of the work. The song Lovely Joan tells the story of a beautiful young girl who has the last laugh on an unfaithful lover. It made an excellent counterpoint to the subject of Greensleeves, a young man who has been jilted by his girlfriend!
