Fiber Arts

This week, the Ether Game Brain Trust is studying up on some "string theory." We're looking at all things string, yarn, threads, textiles, and twine in a show called "Fiber Arts."

Did you know...

  • The famous "Air On The G String" by Johann Sebastian Bach was given that title by violinist August Wilhelmj, who rearranged the third movement to Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major down to C major, so the entire thing could be played on the G string of the violin.
  • Franz Schubert wrote the song "Gretchen Am Spinnrade" ("Gretchen At The Spinning Wheel"), based on a character from Goethe's Faust, when he was only 17 years old!
  • Albert Ginastera took 8 years to write his Harp Concerto. By the time he was done, the harpist who commissioned it had already retired!
  • The song "I've Got The World On A String" by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler premiered at the musical review Cotton Club Parade of 1932, at Harlem's famous (and racist) Cotton Club.
