Mozart: Marriage Of Figaro, Overture

The first scene of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro takes place in the unfurnished bedroom of its title character, Figaro. While his bride-to-be Susanna admires her new hat, Figaro is measuring the floor to see if their new bed will fit in the room. The couple is happy in their new living quarters, although their relationship will suffer through a five-act, operatic roller coaster before they can finally tie the knot. Mozart, and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, went through plenty trials and tribulations of their own before the premiere of this musical classic. Among other problems, the censors of Imperial Vienna demanded that a ballet scene be removed from the opera. The premiere was delayed a few days as Mozart and Da Ponte revised the work to appease the authorities.
