Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893): THE SEASONS: August, The Harvest

Wu Han, piano. Russian Recital (ArtistLed)

Autumn to many of us today usually means cool temperatures, warm cider, delicious food, and maybe some football. But for composers, the primary activities seem to be fixated on the hunt and the harvest. In Tchaikovsky's musical depiction of autumn, we get both. The 12-piece cycle corresponds to each month, and August, which we heard, is subtitled Harvest, while September is The Hunt. The little-performed October is a solemn D-minor autumn melody, and November's Troika is a Russian folk-dance probably more appropriate for the winter holiday season. Tchaikovsky wrote the cycle while living in Moscow, although the pieces were commissioned by a music magazine out of St. Petersburg. Each month the readers were given the accompanying movement to play on their home keyboards.
