First Lady Michelle Obama Breaks Ground On Spring Garden

First Lady Michelle Obama planted her spring kitchen garden this afternoon, joined by by an entourage of garden helpers: the White House chefs, local elementary school children, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the president of the National Gardening Association.

The garden, located on the South Lawn of the White House, has been expanded since last spring's garden (see the layout) and will provide more locally grown food for the White House and local homeless shelters.

The White House released this video last year in conjunction with the launching of the First Lady's kitchen garden project:

A Successful Winter Harvest at the White House

Earlier this month, White House chef Sam Kass revealed a bountiful harvest from the First Lady's winter garden -- including arugula, spinach and turnips -- which proved the White House kitchen garden project to be a viable year-round endeavor.

The winter garden used hoop houses to protect the produce from the particularly inhospitable winter experienced by the D.C. area this year.
