Step Away From The Nuts: Two Recalls Announced

If you're a fan of Skippy peanut butter or hazelnuts, you may want to check out those product labels before indulging. Recalls have been announced for some of these products distributed in and around the Midwest.

Peanut Butter Spread

Salmonella contamination is being reported for Skippy reduced fat "creamy" and "super chunk" peanut butter spread. The affected 16.3-ounce jars can be identified with the following labels:

  • UPC numbers 048001006812 and 048001006782
  • "Best if used by" dates of MAY1612LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY1812LR1, MAY1912LR1, MAY2012LR1, and MAY2112LR1

Bad News For Hazelnut

The FDA has also announced a recall of hazelnuts (filberts) from Los Angeles-based De Franco & Sons. The nuts were distributed in November and December of 2010, and have been linked to seven cases of E. coli in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Consumers are advised to check the labels of any packaged products containing in-shell hazelnuts. Details on the specific products can be found on the FDA's press release.
